Pablo Cesar Cano won a split decision over Ashley Theophane tonight, in a fight that most observers felt was clearly Cano's at the end of 10 rounds. Scores were 98-92, 97-93, and 94-96. Bad Left Hook scored it 97-93 for Cano.
Cano (27-3-1, 20 KO) was able to open up an early lead on Theophane (33-6-1, 10 KO), who was making his debut under the Mayweather Promotions banner in the 142-pound catchweight bout. The 23-year-old Cano hurt Theophane in the fifth round on a right hand, but that seemed to get Theophane to finally wake up for the fight, as he came back to stagger Cano in the same round on a left hook.
From there, Theophane did work his way back into the fight, but Cano managed to get a second wind and take over the fight down the stretch, scoring with effective body work and right hands to the head. Theophane, to his credit, stayed in the fight and battled the entire way through, but it just was not enough.
