We already knew that last Saturday night's Mayweather vs Canelo fight had set the live gate record in Nevada, and was going to take down the pay-per-view revenue record as well, and now we're getting a few more specific details. The revenue is projected to be around $150 million, with an estimated 2.2 million buys putting it for now in second place all-time in that category.
The buys record still belongs to the 2007 fight between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya, which came in at 2.48 million purchases. Their revenue number has fallen, though, with HD a larger portion of the viewing audience these days, as well as this pay-per-view being priced higher. It is worth noting that the initial reports for De La Hoya-Mayweather were 2.15 million, which climbed once all the numbers were in. This fight could still beat the record. It could. It's possible.
The fight figured to be a blockbuster, and on the business end, it has not disappointed.
