The fights are underway in Carson, California, leading up to tonight's HBO main event between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Bryan Vera. Our live coverage thread is over here, you can also follow me on Twitter, and you can stream the fights live on Top Rank TV.
Karim Mayfield TKO-8 Chris Fernandez
Fernandez (21-16-1, 13 KO) is nothing more than an opponent, but Top Rank likes to scout new signings on their own cards before doing anything with them. Mayfield (18-0-1, 11 KO) is a decent fighter and a fringe contender, but he's got a sloppy style and nothing watching him suggests to me he'll be anything more than eventual fodder for a top-level guy.
Gabino Saenz TKO-1 Dominic Coca
No problems in this one, with Saenz getting the stoppage at 2:27 when Dr. Lou Moret stopped the fight after a series of shots and Coca not really answering or looking like he belonged in there with Saenz.
Diego Magdaleno UD-10 Edgar Riovalle
This one was no challenge for Magdaleno (24-1, 9 KO), who was fighting for the first time since his loss to Rocky Martinez in Macao. Riovalle drops to 36-16-2 (25 KO).
Matt Korobov UD-8 Grady Brewer
Korobov improved to 21-0 (13 KO) with a rather easy win over Brewer (30-17, 16 KO). The little spurt of relevance that Brewer had after season two of "The Contender" has burned out, as has the notoriety after his upset win over Fernando Guerrero in 2011. The 42-year-old Brewer has now lost three straight and five of his last seven. Korobov, 30, still hasn't really gone anywhere as a pro. This is, like, a decent win, but there's little to make of it, as Brewer looks physically finished at this point. Brewer was knocked down on an accumulation of shots in the fifth round, and didn't take a single round in the fight.
Fights still to come, updates added after each fight:
Jose Felix Jr vs Joseph Laryea; Daniel Sandoval vs Richard Gutierrez; Oscar Valdez vs Jose Morales; Jose Ramirez vs Carlos Valzada.
