Boxing results, August 25 - 31: A week with "nothing on" delivered good fights

Fights from this past Sunday through Saturday are covered, whether they are high profile or obscure.

Ryota Murata (left) & Bob Arum (right)
Ryota Murata (left) & Bob Arum (right)
Stephen Dunn

This was a pretty good week of fights (even though most American boxing fans thought nothing was on). Find out what was worth watching this week (below) or the week before (here).  The Australian card you'll see the best of this week, but quality fights took place all over the world.

------------------------------------

2013-08-25 Ariake Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan

FUJI TV

Ryota Murata TKO2 Akio Shibata

The pro debut of the 2012 middleweight Olympic Gold Medalist Murata went according to plan. He's pretty much already a fringe contender after dispatching the OPBF middleweight champion in 2 rounds, although no title was on the line (fight scheduled for 6 rounds). Co-promoter Bob Arum, who made the trip to Japan for this fight, seemed very pleased with what he saw. Expect to see Murata in Macao soon enough I suppose...

------------------------------------

2013-08-25 Sky Arena, Zama, Kanagawa, Japan

FUJI TV

Naoya Inoue UD10 Ryoichi Taguchi (97-94, 98-93, 98-92)

Amateur standout Inoue out boxed Taguchi and picked up the Japanese light flyweight title in only his 4th pro fight. I doubt he'll move as fast through the pro ranks as Ryota Murata will, but he's only 20 years old and he'll probably turn out to be a better fighter because he's tiny. No offense to the Japanese, but their talent pool gets pretty thin above super featherweight (also historically). I believe their only middleweight champion in the history of the sport is still Shinji Takehara, who should had to win the WBA title from Reggie Johnson instead of Jorge Fernando Castro, but I digress...

------------------------------------

2013-08-29 Eatons Hill Hotel, Eatons Hill, Queensland, Australia

Fox Sports (Australia)

Rey Anton Olarte D10 Craig Hill Jr (95-96, 96-94, 95-95)

Olarte was down at the very end of round 3 but it appeared that the referee did not count it. Otherwise I believe Hill would have squeaked out a split decision. In any event the vacant Australian light middleweight title remained, uh, vacant. Fortunately the fight was good enough for people to want to see a rematch.

Balazs Varga RTD2 Brett Peters

Peters was dropped twice in the 2nd round and retired in his corner. Vargas picked up the vacant Australia - Queensland State cruiserweight title.

Brent Elliott SD8 Waylon Law (75-77, 77-75, 76-75)

As far as action goes, this was the true main event of the card. The fight made a strong case for Australia's fight of the year with round 8 in contention for ROTY despite no knockdowns. Elliott narrowly defended his Australia - Queensland State super featherweight title. That's all I'm going to write. Just go watch it and enjoy.

Ozan Craddock UD6 Gavin Prunty (59-54, 60-53, 60-53)

Prunty was dropped in round 2 by a left hook.

Hunter Sam KO1 Scott Belshaw

A massive overhand right chopped the tree of Belshaw down.

------------------------------------

2013-08-30 Club Atlético Talleres, Remedios de Escalada, Buenos Aires, Argentina

TV Publica

Matias Ariel Vidondo DQ5 Fabio Eduardo Moli

Moli received a standing 8 count at the end of round 1 and was dropped in rounds 3 and 4. But apart from that, he gave Vidondo hell. In fact, Vidondo was pretty much ready to go in round 5 before the unfortunate conclusion. Moli got tired of Vidondo flopping all over the place without getting credit for any knockdowns and eventually decided to deliver a finishing blow while Vidondo was on his knees. For this Moli was promptly disqualified, thus allowing Vidondo to become the new Argentina (FAB) heavyweight champion. If Moli had more patience he may have won by KO, but dem's da breaks! Nonetheless fans were treated to yet another fun, unskilled, heavyweight brawl as was the case the week before with Hammer-Larsen.

Wait, I thought champions can't lose their titles in disqualifications?

Nevermind, I'm thinking of pro wrestling...although heavyweight boxing might make much more sense these days as "sports entertainment." It's honestly not boring if you look at the right fights. Don't form opinions solely based on what HBO and Showtime feed to you (usually showcases and mismatches).

Sebastian Daniel Rodriguez D6 Diego Luis Pichardo Liriano (58.5-58.5, 58-58.5, 58.5-58.5)

------------------------------------

2013-08-30 Hotel Prado Mar, Puerto Colombia, Colombia

WIN

Luis Eduardo Flores UD8 Edinson Jimenez (77-74, 79-72, 77-74)

Belmar Preciado TKO2 Omny Padilla

Omny tried to quit early in round 2 but was shut down by both the referee AND ringside doctor. It was pretty funny to be honest. After Padilla was done spitting out his mouthpiece a half dozen times, the referee waited until he was helplessly mauled on the ropes for over a minute before he finally calling it off. Good pro debut for the super bantamweight Preciado. I guess they make sure the fans get their monies worth in Colombia...

------------------------------------

2013-08-30 City Hall Ground, Chonburi, Thailand

Thai TV 7

Wanheng Menayothin UD12 Yuma Iwahashi (120-108?, 120-108?, 119-109?)

WBC International minimumweight title

Pongsaklek Wonjongkam UD6? Falazona Fidal

I didn't catch this one, but how could I not report on the exploits of the Thai legend? 10 victories to go before Pong gets 100 wins!

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Club Social y Deportivo Camioneros, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina

TyC

Marcelo Fabian Dominguez TKO7 Hector Alfredo Avila

Heavyweights

Luis Alejandro Tejerina TKO4 Juan Ramon Amaya

Lucas German Priori MD6 Genaro Quiroga (57.5-57.5, 58-57.5, 59-57)

Fernando Ezequiel Farias UD4 Ruben Gabriel Maciel (40-36, 40-36, 40-36.5)

Ignacio Perrin MD5 Fernando Gallo (48-46, 47-47, 47-47)

Note: this was not a pro fight. Yet, if you later turn pro and fight in the United States...then apparently they count it on your pro record. I tell ya, guys, dem's really da breaks!

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Theaterfabrik, Leipzig, Sachsen, Germany

BOXFOTOGRAF.DE

Maik Kurzweil TKO5 Daniel Zimmermann

Rising cruiserweight Kurzweil has now won 11 straight, all by KO, after losing his first 4 pro fights. Or at least that's what BoxRec tells me. Either way, you go, man. #TeamKurzweil

Kai Kurzawa TKO1 Robert Mueller

Maik Heil TKO2 Marlon Szabo

Pierre Dippe D4 Rabie Ben Lakhbhar Inoubli

Amir Khan W4 Maik Taeubig

Yes this is a pro boxer named Amir Khan.

Yes he's a welterweight.

No he's not the one that's going to fight Devon Alexander.

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Gimnasio San Juan de la Barrera, Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico

Televisa

Adrian Hernandez TKO4 Atsushi Kakutani

Hernandez was dropped by a right hand that he actually blocked but was hurt by clean right hand that landed 2 punches before that. Hernandez then regrouped and gradually took control of the fight. Kakutani had the living hell beat out of him as early as round 2. He showed the heart of a true Japanese warrior to last as long as he did after being dropped thrice in the 4th round. Thus Hernandez made another tougher-than-expected WBC light flyweight title defense against a non-descript challenger, par for his usual course. I swear, as soon as the WBC gives Hernandez a real top fighter to fight, I will be SHOCKED if Hernandez manages to win. Then again, that day may never come, and he may still eventually lose anyways... God bless the WBC.

Jessica Gonzalez SD10 Irma Garcia (97-94, 94-96, 96-94)

For whatever reason this wasn't a WBA female bantamweight title fight although both fighters entered within the weight limit and Garcia was reigning champion...

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Gimnasio Revolución, Calpulálpan, Tlaxcala, Mexico

Cadena 3 / Boxeo De Gala

Gilberto Gonzalez KO12 Saul Carreon

Vacant WBC Latino Silver lightweight title

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Complejo Deportivo Inalámbrica, Merida, Yucatán, Mexico

Azteca 7 (Mexico) / UniMas (USA)

Miguel Berchelt TKO5 Cristobal Cruz

Super featherweight prospect Berchelt added a former world champion to his resume and improved to 20-0. Cruz is badly faded so this isn't a great win, but it's pretty good for a 21 year old like Berchelt.

David Sanchez TKO7 Juan Kantun

Jose Cen Torres UD6 Ricardo Ceja (60-54, 60-54, 60-54)

Torres' nickname Relámpago is Spanish for Lightning. It's a pretty nice nickname for a 22 year old coming off 4 straight losses. He did have 11 straight wins before that, though. Based on what I saw in the Ceja victory, Lightning may be a better suited metaphor for JCT's pending career rather than his fighting style.

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Sportgym Radom, Radom, Poland

Bokser.org

Przemyslaw Opalach RTD2 Ionut Trandafir Ilie

Ilie injured his right hand at the end of the 2nd round and didn't come out for round 3.

Michal Zerominski RTD2 Mariusz Czerniewski

Czerniewski was given a standing 8 count at the end of round 2 and opted to quietly retire in his corner.

Nikodem Jezewski W4 Michal Szebestik

Patryk Litkiewicz W4 (someone I can't spell the name of well enough to look him up)

Damian Wrzesinski TKO2 Petr Gyna

Ewa Brodnicka W4 Claudia Szymczak

Ewa Piatkowska TKO1 Pavla Votavova

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Coliseo Roger L. Mendoza, Caguas, Puerto Rico

WAPA

Carlos Cotto DQ1 Jimmy Suarez

BoxRec currently reports this as a TKO win for Cotto but in reality Suarez was disqualified for illegal punches on the break (which were retaliatory). This was one of the fastest DQs I've ever seen for tactics that are pretty common place in boxing. Where was referee Luis Pabon when Paulie Malignaggi needed him against Adrien Broner?

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Open Air Theatre, Krasnogorsk, Russia

Boytsovskiy Klub

Valery Brudov UD6 Jevgenijs Andrejevs

Former (interim) world champion Valery Brudov continues to work his way down to light heavyweight where he belongs. Unfortunately for him the cruiserweight division limit stopped being 190 lbs a long time ago...

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Emperor's Palace, Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa

Super Sport (South Africa) / BeIn Sport (USA)

Ilunga Makabu KO5 Eric Fields

Makubu ended the fight with a highlight reel left hook, out of the southpaw stance, and retained his WBC Silver cruiserweight title, which he may/may not share with Silvio Branco. If you laughed reading that sentence, you're not alone. Again, god bless the WBC.

Ryno Liebenberg TKO1 Gabriel Arturo Ramirez

Vacant WBC International Silver light heavyweight title

Johnny Muller TKO11 Tshepang Mohale

South African light heavyweight title

Nkosinathi Joyi KO9? Benezer Alolod

BeIn only showed highlights at the end of the show, but as Joyi's the new BLH #7 junior flyweight, I might as well list why. Based off Joyi's excellent standing at strawweight combined with his reported domination over a man coming off a very respectable win, Joyi places just below the serious contenders / champions in his new weight class. This is not one of boxing's deeper divisions. That aside, Joyi won the WBC International light flyweight title.

------------------------------------

2013-08-31 Münsterplatz, Basel, Switzerland

Camcorder

Erkan Teper TKO1 Michael Sprott

Sprott was dropped by a devastating right hand that he never saw coming and never recovered. The next time he was floored was ruled a slip and the final time he lost his balance the ropes saved him. Just before staggering helplessly into the ropes the corner threw in the towel but the referee let it go on a few seconds longer. Teper improved to 11-0 with 6 KOs while Sprott took another step toward retirement. Unfortunately recycling used-up heavyweights is a necessary evil in this sport.

If a bout is not mentioned which took place on one of the above cards it’s most likely because I haven’t got around to watching it yet.  In the event that I do watch such a bout at a later time it’s still unlikely I will update this results column.  My columns will be posted once a week, devoted to cards that most casual American boxing fans haven’t seen or heard of.  For available footage of the previously reported bouts follow @sweetboxing on twitter.  You may also email the author of this piece at rgbivins@gmail.com.
