Mitchell vs Arreola results: Chris Arreola gives Seth Mitchell another reality check with first round TKO

Chris Arreola, as we said before the fight, must have been giddy to get an offer to fight glass-chinned heavyweight hopeful Seth Mitchell in a Showtime main event, after suffering his worst career loss to Bermane Stiverne earlier this year. If you wondered why Arreola would have been thrilled to get this offer, tonight showed you.

Mitchell, known for a dodgy chin and a great attitude, was simply unable to take a clean shot from Arreola tonight, and was stopped in the very first round. Some media and fans predicted exactly this; others were nicer and said it would go a few rounds. But once the action was underway, it was clear that Arreola was going to get his career slightly back on track, as his first clean right hand cracked Mitchell in the jaw, sending his legs all over the place, and not long after, he was on the canvas.

With Arreola (36-3, 31 KO) charging for the finish, Mitchell (26-2-1, 19 KO) sort of turned his back to try and escape the barrage, which led referee Jack Reiss to stop the fight. Mitchell protested a bit, but had no major complaints.

We know some things about Mitchell at this point. He's a good guy, and nobody has a bad word to say about him as a person. He works very hard. He stays in shape. He really wants this. And he's got no chin whatsoever. Of all the bad chins on otherwise pretty good fighters in the game today, Mitchell's is the worst. He just can't take a good punch.

With that said, it's hard to imagine what the point to continuing this boxing career is. Mitchell may not step away from the ring, but what's the upside if he stays? He's been stopped by Johnathon Banks and Chris Arreola now. I mean, is there ever going to be a time when he has a realistic shot at winning a world title? It's just not in the cards.

As for Arreola, this was a great rebound win for him. It's going to get some headlines, it's a pretty high-profile fight, and he dominated it with ease. It was child's play for him, apart from the fact that Mitchell can hit really hard, too, and Arreola had to watch out for return fire. He told Showtime's Jim Gray that he wants a rematch with Stiverne, preferably for the WBC heavyweight title, which Vitali Klitschko holds at the moment but really should be stripped of since he's not making any moves to return to the sport, and he's been inactive for a year now.
