A November 9 fight between WBO super featherweight titleholder Rocky Martinez and former featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia is official for November 9, avoiding a purse bid that was scheduled for this afternoon. The two will meet on HBO as part of a tripleheader that will also feature the Nonito Donaire-Vic Darchinyan rematch, plus Demetrius Andrade vs Vanes Martirosyan for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title.
Garcia (32-0, 27 KO) won the WBO featherweight title in January from Orlando Salido, and was set to make a June defense against Juan Manuel Lopez. Garcia missed weight and dropped the title, though the fight did go on, resulting in a predictably easy win for Garcia.
Martinez (27-1-2, 16 KO) won his belt last September in a vacant title fight against Miguel Beltran Jr, then defended in January against Juan Carlos Burgos, leaving with a disputed draw, and in April in Macao against Diego Magdaleno, where he retained via decision.
Martinez-Garcia will reportedly be positioned as the main event for the November 9 broadcast.
