Abner Mares vs. Jhonny Gonzalez II: Fight delayed due to Mares injury

The rematch between Abner Mares and Jhonny Gonzalez will have to be pushed back several weeks, at least.

In some unfortunate news to begin the new year, the anticipated rematch between Abner Mares and Jhonny Gonzalez will have to be pushed back to a later date according to a report from Hustle Boss' Chris Robinson. According to the report, Mares suffered a rib injury in training, and claims that the fight will be moved back exactly one month to March 15.

However, The Ring was able to catch-up with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer yesterday who stated that he does not believe the rematch will occur on March 15 because the injury is too severe for Mares to return that quickly.

"The doctor told him that he should not have any contact for a while. So he can not train for several weeks. Now, what we're going to do now is look at venues and dates and so on. But there is absolutely no date right now and it will certainly not go on March 15. That's definitely a no. So I don't know when it's going to happen. We'll see how Abner's recovery goes and then we'll take it from there."

So now we are stuck with no return date. The contract for the first fight had a rematch clause so the fight should happen eventually we just have no idea of when at this point. It's a bit of a bummer to start off the new year with some bad news, but hopefully it's not too severe of an injury and we still get it sooner rather than later.

In case you are unaware, Gonzalez knocked out Mares in the first round last August in easily one of the biggest upsets of 2013.
