Both Victor Ortiz and Abner Mares will be part of a five-fight broadcast on Showtime on December 13, headlined by the welterweight clash between Amir Khan and Devon Alexander. Also featured on the card will be Keith Thurman vs Leonard Bundu and a WBO junior middleweight title fight between Demetrius Andrade and Jermell Charlo.
Ortiz (29-5-2, 22 KO) has lost three straight fights dating all the way back to his 2011 loss to Floyd Mayweather. He followed that up with a TKO upset loss to Josesito Lopez in June 2012, and a KO-2 loss to Luis Collazo in January of this year. The 27-year-old former WBC welterweight titleholder still has time to stage a successful comeback and have many good years in the sport, but there are serious questions about how badly he wants to be in there.
Mares (27-1-1, 14 KO) will look for a second straight win after his decision over Jonathan Oquendo on July 12. He's parted ways with trainer Virgil Hunter after a one-fight stint and gone back to Clemente Medina, who led him to world titles at bantamweight, super bantamweight, and featherweight.
Neither Ortiz nor Mares have opponents named yet, and both should be expected to get favorable matchups in tune-up fights.
