Jessie Vargas wants Pacquiao fight

Jessie Vargas is hoping a good win in his upcoming fight with Antonio DeMarco will put in the running to face Manny Pacquiao.

Add Jessie Vargas to the long list of fighters who want a shot at one of the sports cash cows. Vargas will be facing Antonio DeMarco on the Pacquiao-Algieri undercard, and hopes an impressive performance can get him the nod to meet up with the legend himself. Though Pacquiao has indicated plans to move back down to 140lbs and Vargas has recently intimated his intentions of moving up to 147, Vargas says that Bob Arum told him that the fight could still very well happen.

"Not to put my boss on the spot too much but he did talk to me and he did tell me that it was a fight that was out there and that it was very possible that it could happen. He just told me in a very serious conversation that, ‘It's up to you as well,'" said Vargas, 25, who will also employ Angel Heredia as his strength and conditioning coach.

"[Arum] said, ‘It's up to you to perform and you have to do your part as well.' So I respect that and that's the way the game is. I'm doing everything on my part to put myself into that position, which is to get that possible fight with Manny Pacquiao...It's definitely motivation and it's definitely putting a little pressure on me but it's good pressure."

Needless to say, this is another potential fight that likely won't move the needle for fight fans. Vargas is a technically sound fighter, but it still remains to be seen what he'll look like under the tutelage of new trainer Roy Jones Jr. That aside, the only calls I've heard for a Pacquaio-Vargas fight have been of the sarcastic variety.
