Marcos Maidana to return in April or May 2015

Marcos Maidana will look to use a high profile 2014 as a springboard to big fights in 2015.

Marcos Maidana's manager Sebastian Contursi met with power player Al Haymon last week to map out a plan for the man who lost twice this year to Floyd Mayweather, and Contursi says that a spring 2015 return in April or May is the current plan.

"I had a meeting with Al Haymon last week and we were just talking. There are a lot of big names out there for Marcos, given that he is with Al Haymon," said Contursi. I didn't mention anyone in particular and there are no dates; there is nothing firm or planned or no fight so far but when the opportunity arises, we will know."

Maidana (35-5, 31 KO) gave Mayweather all he could handle on May 3, losing a competitive majority decision, didn't look totally outclassed in the September 13 rematch, either, though he lost a clearer decision in that fight.

The 31-year-old Maidana remains a top contender at welterweight, and Haymon has a big stable at 147 pounds, as well as at 140, where someone could come up in weight to take a big fight.

Contursi mentioned Danny Garcia, Andre Berto, Amir Khan, Devon Alexander, and Keith Thurman in particular. Maidana lost to Khan back in 2010 in a very exciting fight, lost to Alexander in 2012 in what was a landslide, and nearly fought Thurman in 2012 before that fight fell apart, with Maidana's side rejecting the offer.

Khan and Alexander will square off on December 13 on Showtime, while Thurman faces Leonard Bundu on that same card. Garcia and Berto currently have nothing scheduled.
