Bernard Hopkins turns 50 on January 15, and five days later, he'll be honored in Philadelphia with a show at The 2300 Arena -- formerly and perhaps most (in)famously known as the ECW Arena -- in south Philadelphia, which will feature live boxing on FOX Sports 1.
The main event will see Philadelphia's own Eric Hunter (19-3, 10 KO) take on Rene Alvarado (21-3, 14 KO) in a ten-round super featherweight bout.
"I'm so excited that Golden Boy has decided to honor my birthday in this way," Hopkins said of the event to be televised on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes. "The best present that they can give me is to bring a great night of fights to my hometown and give Philly boxing fans something to celebrate." [RingTV.com]
Alvarado, a 25-year-old Nicaraguan, was victim of an upset on May 26, when he was beaten by Rocky Juarez, who has shot his hand out of the boxing grave and will also be headlining a January FS1 show when he faces Robinson Castellanos on the 26th in San Antonio.
Hunter, 28, has won two straight over Yenifel Vicente and Daniel Ramirez, following a DQ-1 loss to Mike Oliver in September 2013, for hitting on the break. Two of Hunter's three losses, in fact, have come via DQ. He was also disqualified in December 2010 against Luis Franco for repeated low blows.
Junior welterweight Michael "The Artist" Perez (21-1-2, 10 KO) is also slated for action on the show.
