With a deal to face Sergio Martinez "95% complete" and expected to be announced soon, Miguel Cotto and trainer Freddie Roach will head into their second training camp together on April 14 to prepare for the June 7 fight on HBO pay-per-view.
Cotto (38-4, 31 KO) last fought in October, stopping Delvin Rodriguez easily in three rounds, looking like the ferocious, offense-minded Cotto of old under Roach's tutelage. Martinez (51-2-2, 38 KO) hasn't fought since April of 2013, when he survived Martin Murray in a controversial decision in Argentina.
The fight will be Cotto's first above 154 pounds, as he challenges lineal middleweight champ Martinez, who has held the title since beating Kelly Pavlik in 2010. The fight reportedly will have a 159-pound catchweight, a tactic not unfamiliar for Team Cotto, who also enforced a one-pound drop from the normal weight against Antonio Margarito in 2011.
Cotto-Martinez -- the naming another demand from Team Cotto -- will take place at Madison Square Garden.
