Boxing Scene has reported that Bob Arum has been in recent discussions with Fernando Beltran, president of Zanfer Promotions, about the possibility of matching up his fighter Mike Alvarado against Zanfer's Juan Manuel Marquez. According to the article, the fight is being planned for May 17 at The Forum in Los Angeles, California. If that date sounds familiar to you it could be because that's when a bout between Mikey Garcia and Yuriorkis Gamboa has also been discussed to take place. Garcia - Gamboa would, according to Boxing Scene, be the co-feature to Marquez - Alvarado if the fight does come together.
Bob Arum had this to say, via Boxing Scene:
"A few minutes ago I just spoke with Fernando Beltran (who handles Marquez). Juan Manuel Marquez, maybe he will go against Mike Alvarado. And then the winner? Although not officially, (the winner) would face the winner of the rematch between Pacquiao and Bradley. This is what might happen here. We are thinking about (doing that fight) at the new Forum in Los Angeles," Arum told Carlos Narvaez."
So nothing is a done deal but it's looking like there is a good possibility that Marquez makes his return against Alvarado. Alvarado is coming off a stoppage loss to the man that Marquez said that he would never face, Ruslan Provodnikov. One has to wonder how much he has left following the loss to Provodnikov and two wars with Brandon Rios, not to mention other taxing fights in his career.
Will it be on PPV or HBO? I have no idea at this point but Alvarado is no big name and Marquez did about 375,000 buys against Tim Bradley last fall coming off the monster win over Manny Pacquiao. I couldn't imagine booming predictions for this fight if it was to be served to us on PPV. However, matching this with Garcia - Gamboa would make a dandy HBO doubleheader.
How do you feel about Marquez possibly returning with Alvarado?
