A rematch between Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola for the now-vacant WBC heavyweight title appears headed to Mexico in June, according to a report by Miguel Rivera at BoxingScene.com. HBO will televise in the States, with Televisa carrying the fight in Mexico.
Stiverne (23-1-1, 20 KO) defeated Arreola (36-3, 31 KO) rather handily in April 2013. That fight was a WBC eliminator, but Stiverne did not get a shot at Vitali Klitschko, who recently moved into "champion emeritus" status with an unofficial retirement. Vitali has not fought since September 2012.
Stiverne hasn't been in the ring since beating Arreola, but "The Nightmare" returned in September to smash Seth Mitchell in a one-round Showtime main event, and the WBC has been trying to position him as the first Mexican/Mexican-American heavyweight champion for a few years now. Arreola fought and lost to Vitali in 2009.
Stiverne-Arreola was ordered as the vacant title fight in December, days after Klitschko was removed as champion.
