Salido vs Lomachenko results: Orlando Salido beats Vasyl Lomachenko by split decision

Orlando Salido is no longer the WBO featherweight champion, but he is the guy who handed amateur legend Vasyl Lomachenko his first pro loss.

No history was made tonight in San Antonio, as Orlando Salido pulled out a split decision win over phenom prospect Vasyl Lomachenko, who attempted to win a world title in just his second pro fight. Salido won on scores of 116-112, 115-113, and 113-115. BLH had it 115-113 for Salido.

Salido (41-12-2, 28 KO) started fast, building up a good lead in the first half of the fight, before Lomachenko finally started throwing a bit more, as Salido began to fade, perhaps due to the fact that he wasn't in peak shape after missing weight yesterday.

Lomachenko (1-1, 1 KO) nearly scored a rally stoppage late in the fight, as he had Salido badly hurt in the 12th round, but the Mexican veteran was able to hang on -- literally -- and survive the final minute and change. Salido's veteran savvy also helped him get away with roughly 297 low blows on the HBO commentary tally, though part of that can also be credited to the worse-than-usual performance of the always-terrible Laurence Cole, referee extraordinaire.

"We knew he was young, fast, and strong, but we knew what we had to do to win," Salido told Max Kellerman through a translator. "Being intelligent, measuring his punches."

"We did our job," he added. When asked by Kellerman why he didn't make weight, he said that he's been a featherweight for 12 years, and his body simply could not make the weight any longer.

"I did my best. I really tried. But it didn't work out. I don't want to say anything about the judges. I'm a fighter, and my job is to fight," Lomachenko said of the decision.

When asked if his lack of pro experience kept him from trading dirty tactics with Salido, Lomachenko said, "I'm a clean fighter. I don't like that kind of fighting."

If nothing else, it's a huge learning experience for Vasyl Lomachenko. Welcome to the pros. Welcome to Texas. Welcome to Boxing: It's A Business, And You Don't Understand.
