Reigning IBF lightweight titlist Miguel Vazquez may be back on May 31 if negotiations for a fight with Kevin Mitchell go well, and if Mitchell gets by what should be an easy fight this weekend on the Sky Sports card. Promoter Eddie Hearn is speaking with Vazquez's team about a fight on the Froch-Groves II undercard.
Vazquez (34-3, 13 KO) returned on February 22 in Macao with a routine defeat of Denis Shafikov, a previously unbeaten contender. Mitchell (36-2, 26 KO) fought three times last year, beating lower-level opponents after a one-sided defeat against Ricky Burns in 2012. He's scheduled to fight on Saturday against Mikheil Avakyan (21-11-4, 8 KO), a 22-year-old Georgian fighter who specializes in losing to guys who need someone to beat.
Vazquez would no doubt be a heavy favorite if the fight does happen, as he has been able to pretty handily outbox his foes to date since "upsetting" Breidis Prescott on Friday Night Fights in 2009.
