WBC super bantawmeight titleholder Leo Santa Cruz is coming off of an impressive domination of Cristian Mijaresthis past Saturday on the Canelo-Angulo undercard, and has set his sights on a potential matchup later this year with unbeaten contender Carl Frampton, saying it could be the Fight of the Year.
Santa Cruz (27-0-1, 15 KO) shut out Mijares in their fight, and now Frampton (17-0, 12 KO) is due to face Hugo Cazares on April 4 in a WBC eliminator. Frampton will be the favorite in that fight against the 35-year-old Mexican veteran, but Cazares (40-7-2, 27 KO) has a load of experience and is a former 108- and 115-pound titlist. Whether or not the naturally smaller man can hold up against Frampton is the real question, as Frampton has emerged as one of the best 122-pound fighters in the world.
If he does win as expected and the fight is made, Santa Cruz says he's willing to go to Ireland for the fight:
"I'll fight him wherever. If they want me to fight him in Ireland, I'll come over and fight him in Ireland. If they want me to fight him here [United States], I'll fight him here. Wherever they make the fight I'm willing to battle him.
"I think the fight is likely for between September-November around those months. After this fight [against Mijares] I'll take a little break and get ready for those months because it's a big fight, so we have to have a little more time to get ready for it."
If this fight happens, who do you favor right now? And given the action style of both men, do you think we might see a Fight of the Year contender from them?
