Shawn Porter and Paulie Malignaggi scored big wins on the same December 7 card in Brooklyn, and now they're headed for a clash with one another. Porter will defend his IBF welterweight title for the first time against Malignaggi on April 19, part of Showtime's Hopkins-Shumenov bill.
Porter (23-0-1, 14 KO) scored a mild upset over Devon Alexander in December to lift the belt, and that same night in the main event, Malignaggi (33-5, 7 KO) rather handily beat Brooklyn rival Zab Judah by decision. The 33-year-old Malignaggi is a former titleholder at both 140 and 147 pounds, and many felt he didn't deserve to lose his WBA welterweight title last June to Adrien Broner. For the 26-year-old Porter, it's a big chance to prove that he wasn't a one-night wonder at this level.
This fight, along with Hopkins-Shumenov and Quillin-Konecny, makes for a card with three world title fights at the DC Armory.
In addition, the winner of the Porter-Malignaggi fight has agreed to face mandatory challenger Kell Brook within 90 days of their bout. Brook (31-0, 21 KO) has a tune-up fight this weekend.
