Last weekend was another one ruled by controversy in boxing, as there was a lot of debate over Deontay Wilder's knockout of Malik Scott, and the scoring of Danny Garcia's main event majority decision win in Puerto Rico was widely questioned.
According to fight score collector Bobby Hunter, 70% of polled media scored the bout for Herrera (20-4, 7 KO), who lost a majority decision that was seen coming well ahead of time due to the WBC's open scoring practice.
12.5% scored the fight for Garcia, while 17.5% -- including yours truly -- had the fight a draw. Nobody's score went wider than 116-112 on either side, which was the score that two of the three ringside judges had for Garcia (28-0, 16 KO), giving him the victory. The third judge had it a 114-114 draw.
After eight rounds, one judge had Herrera ahead 77-75, while two had Garcia leading 78-74, meaning that without knockdowns or something special, the best that Herrera could have hoped for was a majority draw.
