Golden Boy signs Nicaragua's Rene Alvarado to promotional deal

Rene Alvarado was signed to a promotional contract by Golden Boy Promotions, and may get a chance for a big fight sometime this year.

Golden Boy Promotions has added 25-year-old Nicaraguan Rene Alvarado to its promotional stable, as the company announced the signing of the fighter earlier today. Alvarado (20-2, 14 KO) is coming off of a big win over Robinson Castellanos, which put him into the running for the WBC featherweight title, as he picked up the organization's Silver belt with the win on February 15.

"This is the most exciting moment of my career, and as a member of the Golden Boy Promotions team I know I'll get every opportunity to achieve my dreams in this sport," said Alvarado. "My win against Castellanos was just the beginning, and I hope to get a world title fight soon."

"Rene Alvarado flew onto our radar with his win over Castellanos last month, and with his skill, determination and warrior spirit, we believe he has all the tools to become a world champion," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "He is a great addition to our team and we're pleased to be working with him."

Golden Boy may in time look to match Alvarado with Abner Mares, who recently announced his decision to remain at featherweight, and he could be in the mix to face someone like Leo Santa Cruz, too, who is currently at super bantamweight but could soon move up in weight.
