Canelo vs Angulo: Full fight - Canelo vs Lopez, 2012

Canelo Alvarez faces Alfredo Angulo this Saturday night on Showtime PPV, but before then, we're looking back on some of their recent fights. Here, Canelo Alvarez dominates Josesito Lopez in 2012.

Scott Christ is the managing editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2006.

Canelo Alvarez signed in 2012 to face Paul Williams in his Showtime pay-per-view debut that September. Williams, though, had his career tragically ended in a motorcycle accident shortly after. Then, Golden Boy came up with a good alternative: Alvarez would face Victor Ortiz on the date instead, with only an interim tune-up against Josesito Lopez standing in Ortiz's way.

Lopez decided to take matters into his own hands, breaking Ortiz's jaw in their June 23 fight and putting the kibosh on Canelo-Ortiz. With no readily available options, Golden Boy made Josesito Lopez an offer he couldn't refuse, paying him handsomely to move up to 154 pounds from 147 (and really, Lopez was a 140-pound fighter moving up to 147 for Ortiz) and take his chances against Canelo. No pay-per-view, but another Showtime main event.

Bravely, Lopez took on the challenge. Predictably, Alvarez was far too big, dismantling the gutsy "Riverside Rocky" in five rounds, putting him on the canvas in the second, third, and fourth frames.

It's an entertaining fight, particularly if you have a thing for one-sided slaughters and matchups that prove why we have weight classes. It's also an example of what you are very unlikely to see Canelo do to Alfredo Angulo, a full-fledged and powerful junior middleweight.
