Canelo Alvarez has a big task in front of him with tomorrow's Showtime pay-per-view main event against Alfredo Angulo, but promoter Richard Schaefer already has in mind what could come next -- if Canelo wins, that is.
"I think if Canelo beats Angulo, then we could be talking about a possible fight against Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez. We can not rule out Martinez [winning the fight], but if Cotto wins we will try to make that fight, a great pay-per-view between two of the best junior middleweights. We have to wait and see what happens," Schaefer said.
Cotto (38-4, 31 KO) and Martinez (51-2-2, 38 KO) meet on June 7 on HBO pay-per-view, but Cotto is a true free agent, and if he wins, is free to bounce back-and-forth between networks, and between working with Top Rank and Golden Boy. Martinez is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, but he'll have one more fight left on his deal with HBO after the Cotto bout, and obviously that's a roadblock.
Canelo-Cotto has been a desired fight for a while now, and certainly if Cotto beat Martinez, and Canelo beats Angulo, it's a big-time pay-per-view fight for later this year. If Martinez wins, hey, maybe they do Canelo-Cotto anyway. It's still marketable.
