Canelo vs Angulo results: Leo Santa Cruz dominates Cristian Mijares to retain title

Leo Santa Cruz may have put in his best performance yet with a one-sided win over Cristian Mijares tonight in Las Vegas.

Leo Santa Cruz was the heavy favorite to win tonight against Cristian Mijares, and he lived up to the odds, completely overpowering and outclassing veteran lefty Cristian Mijares to retain his WBC super bantamweight title on scores of 120-108, 120-108, and 119-109. BLH had it 120-108.

Santa Cruz (27-0-1, 15 KO) is reportedly targeting a fight with unbeaten young super bantamweight Carl Frampton next, and coming off of this performance especially, that's a really attractive fight for anyone familiar with both fighters. They have action styles, but they can also box, and I think that's a potential Fight of the Year-type matchup if the stars align on the night -- if it happens.

This isn't really a huge setback for Mijares (49-8-2, 24 KO), who wasn't expected to win and, you know, didn't. He can basically get back to his career the same as it was before this fight. He showed toughness by taking a lot of shots from the aggressive Santa Cruz, but he was never competitive, squaring up more than most expected. Santa Cruz jumped on him from the first round, and Mijares just never got untracked.

Our live coverage continues, with our main event up next. Canelo Alvarez faces Alfredo Angulo.
