Floyd Mayweather: Maidana is a guy that I can't overlook

New, 41 comments

Floyd Mayweather discusses his May 3 fight with Marcos Maidana, the idea of fighting Bernard Hopkins down the line, and more.

On how Maidana compares to past opponents

"I can't really say, because I was just looking at the fight as a fan or a spectator. He went out there, he out-hustled Adrien Broner. He beat him to the punch. He went out there and done what he supposed to do. He's a solid champion, he's a strong champion. He has an 80% knockout ratio. This is a guy that I can't overlook."

On comparisons between Maidana and Carlos Baldomir

"I can't really say. I've been in there with Baldomir. Baldomir is a southpaw, (Maidana) is orthodox. [Editor's note: Baldomir is not a southpaw.] So right there that's something that's totally different. I think he's probably a bigger puncher than Baldomir, so we'll just have to see how the fight plays out May 3rd."

On whether or not Maidana is the biggest puncher he's faced

"There's been guys that, I mean -- Cotto's a good puncher, Canelo's a good puncher. There's a lot of guys out there that are very, very solid and very, very strong. I can name out of 45 guys, there's probably 20 guys that are very, very solid -- you know, Diego Corrales was a big puncher. The thing is, it's about being smart. Taking your time, keeping your composure, just going out there and being the best that you can be."

On the possibility of fighting Bernard Hopkins

"I think Bernard Hopkins is a legendary champion. I think Bernard Hopkins is a living legend, like myself. I truly believe in taking one fight at a time. My focus is Marcos Maidana. That's the guy that's gonna be in front of me May 3rd. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best."

On how many cars he's bought over the years

"I got a good fleet, but I don't have 90 cars. He was talking about on All Access, he was talking about in 18 years, how many cars I've purchased. But not just from one dealership. Throughout 18 years, my mother has probably had a new car every year, so that's 18 cars. My father may get a new car, my sister, my nephew, my family. So not just me having 80 cars or 90 cars. It's not about being selfish. I'm not a selfish person."

On how fast he's driven one of his cars

"I've probably taken my Bugatti 160. It's fast. It's a rush. It's a rush."
