With the IBF having officially ordered a fight between welterweight champ Shawn Porter and mandatory challenger Kell Brook yesterday, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, Porter's promoter, says that he's looking forward to making that fight, and wants to see his guy in with someone else who's young and hungry.
"Clearly he's one of the best welterweights now and I think a threat to everyone after you've seen what he's done with Devon Alexander, another wonderful fighter, and following that up with Paulie Malignaggi. It's the hottest weight class. We'll discuss it with team Porter and why not? Me as a fan, after we've seen what he's done with Devon, who is an outstanding boxer, and what he's done with Paulie, who is an outstanding boxer ... I'd love to see the match-up with someone as young, as aggressive, as relentless as Shawn Porter."
Porter (25-0-1, 14 KO) either has to fight Brook (32-0, 22 KO) or forfeit his title belt, and his title is his biggest bargaining chip. If Brook doesn't take the fight, that's another matter, but there's no reason to suspect that Porter-Brook won't happen. Golden Boy has worked peacefully with Matchroom Boxing in the past, and the fighters both knew that this was going to happen, as Brook and Matchroom stepped aside to let Porter face Paulie Malignaggi in an optional defense, with the agreement that the winner would face Kell within 90 days. So it's no surprise to anybody that this fight has to happen. Nobody's been blindsided.
My best guess is that Schaefer is going to discuss with Team Porter whether they can be ready to go for this level of fight by July 12, which would put the bout on the Canelo-Lara pay-per-view card in Las Vegas.
Brook did have this on Twitter after Porter's destruction of Paulie:
Great performance @ShowtimeShawnP lets see how you are with me! who is also a young lion! #AndTheNew
