Schaefer: Porter vs Brook fight likely won't land on Canelo-Lara card

Shawn Porter will face Kell Brook, but Richard Schaefer says it probably won't happen on Golden Boy's July 12 pay-per-view card.

Richard Schaefer hasn't written off the possibility, and says he'll have to speak with Al Haymon first, but Golden Boy's CEO says he sees the Shawn Porter vs Kell Brook mandatory IBF title fight as a main event, and not likely for the Canelo-Lara bill on July 12.

Golden Boy and Matchroom Boxing still have to work out a deal, and if they don't, it will go to purse bid on May 21. The fight is due by July 19, which is why the July 12 date seems attractive, as it's close to the due date for the fight, with a date Golden Boy already has locked up for a major card in Las Vegas.

"That would be difficult to achieve because there's a mandatory obligation, which is Kell Brook, and I really don't see that that is an undercard fight," said Schaefer. "That's a main event fight, and so I'm going to be sitting down with Al Haymon next week and seeing what the plans are. But I do not believe that that would be on the Canelo card."

Other fights being worked on for July 12 do include Devon Alexander vs Jesus Soto Karass (reportedly a done deal), Mauricio Herrera vs Johan Perez, and Leo Santa Cruz returning to action. If those go through, that would obviously take up the four-fight bill for that date, leaving Porter-Brook for another time.

Golden Boy, Matchroom, and the IBF could also reach an agreement to allow the fight to take place later than July 19. If all parties agree and the deal is signed, then there wouldn't really be an issue there. It's mostly just about getting the fight done, and all parties sound confident that it will be an easy fight to put together.
