The May 24 HBO Boxing After Dark event has been scrapped, as heavyweight Mike Perez suffered a shoulder injury in training, canceling his bout with Bryant Jennings, which was set up as (another) WBC eliminator in the main event.
Along with the Jennings-Perez bout, the Daniel Geale vs Matthew Macklin fight is also off, as well as the Edwin Rodriguez vs Marcus Johnson fight, both of which were also scheduled to air on HBO.
"I was floored when I got the call this morning from Perez's manager, Patrick Thomas, that he injured his shoulder in sparring," said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, Perez's promoter. "Mike is flying back to Ireland to see a shoulder specialist. I'm hoping to hear good news that the injury is not too serious and the fight can be rescheduled in the near future. I know Mike is devastated because of this setback but looks forward to continuing his dream of marching toward a WBC world title fight."
Jennings' promoter Gary Shaw is also hoping that the fight can be rescheduled soon, but at the moment, it's off indefinitely.
This means that Showtime's May 24 card, headlined by Adonis Stevenson vs Andrzej Fonfara, will now run unopposed.
