Daniel Geale just lost a May 24 HBO date with Matthew Macklin, but it could turn out to be a blessing, as the former IBF and WBA middleweight titleholder may now be headed for a clash with Gennady Golovkin on HBO for this summer.
"We're in negotiations with Golovkin and HBO to try and put the Geale-Golovkin fight together," Geale's manger Bill Treacy told AAP on Sunday.
... "I'm very disappointed about [the Macklin cancellation], but it's happened to me before early on in my career," Geale told AAP. "It's probably put me in a position for a huge fight in a few months so I'm looking forward and staying positive. I want to have another world title by the end of the year."
Treacy says that there have been talks of Geale facing Felix Sturm again later this year, if Sturm beats Sam Soliman on May 31, but says that they would prefer just knowing that they're going to fight Golovkin.
Geale (30-2, 16 KO) lost his IBF belt last August to Darren Barker on HBO, and was stripped of his WBA belt before ever getting to defend it after beating Sturm for that belt in 2012. Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO) was in negotiations to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a super middleweight fight in July, but that is on hold, at the very least, because Chavez is currently at odds with Top Rank.
Golovkin-Geale is about the best fight either of them could realistically make at this point, but do you think it's a particularly interesting fight? How excited would you be to see it?
