Cotto vs Martinez undercard is official for June 7 HBO PPV

The pay-per-view undercard for HBO's June 7 offering, featuring Miguel Cotto vs Sergio Martinez in the main event, has been known for a bit now, but was made official via a press release today. The news isn't so good for those hoping to see significant fights.

The featured undercard bout will be a featherweight rematch between Wilfredo Vazquez Jr (23-3-1, 19 KO) and Marvin Sonsona (18-1-1, 15 KO), set for 10 rounds. Sonsona was just 19 when he lost to WV2 in early 2010, and now at 23 has rebounded somewhat, with a lot of time to potentially be the sort of star fighter it was once thought he could be. A Filipino action fighter, Sonsona was one of the many guys considered a potential "next Pacquiao" at one point, but being a kid, he did kid things, and wound up not ready for that sort of pressure or spotlight, which is understandable.

That was the fight that legitimized Vazquez, a fighter with the name and bloodlines, but not a big promotional push as a prospect. He's sort of plateaued since then, going 5-3 with losses to Jorge Arce (a big upset at the time), Nonito Donaire, and Yasutaka Ishimoto.

Limited junior middleweight slugger Jorge Melendez (28-3-1, 26 KO) will also be in 10-round action, facing former bogus titleholder Yuri Foreman (32-2, 9 KO). Melendez can punch, but was thoroughly outboxed by Nick Brinson not long ago. Foreman, now 33, is an also-ran who once got to hold a title briefly. His last major fight came against Pawel Wolak in March 2011, with Foreman quitting after six rounds. He's gone 4-0 against the type of club fighters he's built his record on since returning in 2013.

Andy Lee (32-2, 22 KO) will move down to 154 pounds for a 10-round fight against John Jackson (18-1, 15 KO). Lee is another fighter like Melendez, Foreman, or Vazquez who seem to have shown us all they're going to show us at this point, but promoter Lou DiBella is selling the idea moving down in weight will make Lee more dangerous. In his eight-year pro career, Lee has never weighed in under 158½ pounds, so it may be more a Hail Mary play to try and get something out of his career at this point. Jackson, 25, is the son of Julian "The Hawk" Jackson. In a Showtime loss to Willie Nelson in September 2012, he showed some promise, and he can punch some.
