James Toney was once one of the best fighters in the world, and now at age 45, the man known as "Lights Out" is simply trying to stay in the game a little longer. According to World Boxing News, Toney's team is trying to secure a fight with Eddie Chambers, and have also offered their services for a fight this year with young Hughie Fury.
Toney vs Chambers would, in theory (or whatever), take place on the Fury-Chisora II card on July 26, but as of now, the idea is entirely from Toney's camp, who are trying to secure a fight for the faded former star.
Toney's recent run of fights hasn't exactly been impressive, as he's lost wide decisions to the likes of Denis Lebedev and Lucas Browne, with wins over club fighters and a semi-final loss to Jason Gavern in a heavyweight Prizefighter tournament last November. At this point, he's hanging on to whatever is left of a career, but there's always a place in European, Australian, and Russian rings, it seems, for American names from the 1990s who have long since seen their talents erode.
Would you be interested in seeing Toney back in the ring for fights with Chambers or Hughie Fury? Does the Fury fight sound more interesting, if only because it's a legitimate step up for Hughie at this stage of his career?
