Tonight at 10:00 pm EDT on HBO, Terence Crawford defends his WBO lightweight world title against Yuriorkis Gamboa in a big fight for both men, with Crawford holding home field advantage in Omaha, Nebraska, for his first HBO main event.
Crawford (23-0, 16 KO) beat Ricky Burns in March to win the belt in Scotland, a fight that was his biggest to date but not televised by HBO. This time, the 26-year-old star on the rise is back on major U.S. TV, facing Cuba's Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO) in a fight that could wind up a showcase for the new guy on the block, as Gamboa is undersized at 135 pounds and has fought just two times since 2011.
That said, Gamboa also has a chance to re-energize his brand, if you will, if he can beat Crawford this evening. The 32-year-old Gamboa wasn't exactly highlight reel material last June, when he fought Darleys Perez in a lightweight bout in Montreal, but he's got the pure talent to give anyone problems.
In the co-feature, unbeaten middleweights Matt Korobov (23-0, 14 KO) and Jose Uzcategui (22-0, 18 KO) will meet with the hopes that the winner will become a new player at 160 pounds.
