Speaking at the BET Awards last night, Floyd Mayweather confirmed that his September 13 return to the ring will be a rematch with Marcos Maidana, the Argentine slugger who pushed Mayweather hard on May 3 of this year, ending the speculation about what that fight will be, and promising a "surprise" for May 2015.
Speaking at the BET Awards in Los Angeles, he said: 'September 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana vs Floyd Mayweather Part II. 'Then in May, I'll have a big surprise for you.'
Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO) beat Maidana (35-4, 31 KO) on majority decision scores of 117-111, 116-112, and 114-114. Maidana's power and aggression gave Floyd fits in the early portions of the fight in particular, as he was able to effectively rough up the unbeaten superstar, and that stayed for most of the fight, though most did agree that Mayweather did enough to earn the victory.
There was some call for a rematch, and with Floyd's options pretty limited right now -- even if you believe the talk that the "Cold War" is over, Mayweather is still not working with Top Rank fighters -- the rematch makes sense. Mayweather and his team have said that if the fight happened again, Floyd would simply choose to make it easier and outbox Maidana this time, though not everyone is buying that Mayweather purposely got himself more beaten up than usual to entertain the fans.
If this winds up being official, what's your feeling? Is this the right fight? Does Maidana deserve the immediate rematch? Is this a case of being the best available option?
