After bouncing around a bit, the welterweight title fight between Shawn Porter and Kell Brook has landed on August 16 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Also on the bill will be Omar Figueroa against Daniel Estrada and a rematch of Sakio Bika and Anthony Dirrell.
Golden Boy has not officially announced the fight yet, but it appears to be official according to this report from ESPN's Dan Rafael.
Porter and Brook will be fighting for Porter's IBF title which he won by decisioning Devon Alexander last December and defended by knocking out Paulie Malignaggi this past April.
It will be Brook's first shot at a legitimate world title and certainly his stiffest test as a professional. While still showing significant promise, Brook has plateaued and even stumbled a bit, escaping a dogfight with Carson Jones with a majority decision. Brook took care of Jones handily in the rematch and has also since dispatched of Ricky Hatton conqueror Vyacheslav Senchenko.
The triple bill is rounded out by two more good fights. Rising action star Omar Figueroa looks to bounce back from a ho-hum performance against Jerry Belmontes. He's facing Daniel Estrada, a Mexican fighter with a record of 32-2-1. Both have faced and beaten Nihito Arakawa, Estrada winning by technical decision in what sounds like a messy fight. Estrada was cut early and then elbowed late causing swelling around his eye which prompted the stoppage.
Finally, Sakio Bika and Anthony Dirrell will renew hostilities in a rematch of their first fight which ended in a majority draw. Neither fighter has been in action since their meeting last December.
