Friday Night Fights results: Gabriel Campillo hands Thomas Williams Jr first pro loss

Thomas Williams Jr faced a tough test tonight in Gabriel Campillo, and he didn't pass, suffering his first pro defeat on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

ESPN Friday Night Fights

With a building wave of hype at his back, Thomas Williams Jr entered tonight's ESPN Friday Night Fights main event as the favorite against former light heavyweight titlist Gabriel Campillo. Lauded by many fans and analysts, including ESPN's Teddy Atlas, Williams was supposed to be in a stepping stone fight tonight. But in boxing, prospects reach their first wall all the time. Williams reached his tonight.

Campillo (24-6-1, 10 KO) stopped Williams (17-1, 12 KO) after five rounds of action, busting up the prospect, possibly breaking his nose, and opening and then working a cut very effectively. The fight was stopped on the doctor's advice, with no protest from Williams, who then went to Atlas at ringside for a face-to-face, heart-to-heart sort of moment, a rarity that we saw on live TV. Atlas told Williams to come back from this defeat, which he certainly could do. He's got a lot of talent. But tonight he faced what turned out to be his first serious challenge, and the unfortunate reality is that he sort of crumbled against a tricky, skilled, veteran fighter who got an opportunity and pounced on it.

Campillo, 35, may no longer be a contender, but could be great in a gatekeeper's role at 175 pounds. Williams, at 26, has a lot of time to learn from this loss and right the ship. That's on him now, and how he comes back from this will be the biggest test of his young pro career.

What do you think? Did Williams simply crash and burn? Will he learn from this loss and come back strong?
