Former featherweight titleholder Abner Mares is the latest fighter to join manager Al Haymon's roster.
Mares last fought on July 12's Canelo vs Lara undercard, winning a unanimous decision over Jonathan Oquendo. That was Mare's first fight since being upset by Jhonny Gonzalez last August. Mares had to pull out of an immediate rematch after suffering a rib injury during training camp. July's return was Mares' first fight with new trainer Virgil Hunter, who Mares hired to shore up his defense.
Mares' contract with Golden Boy runs till this November, and the plan is for Mares to fight once more this year. It is unclear whether Mares' next fight will be promoted by Golden Boy. Mares would like to rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez or face another top 126-pound titleholder, but that would be a challenge since Haymon doesn't do business promoter Top Rank, who promotes titleholders Nonito Donaire (WBA "Super World" title), Vasyl Lomachenko (WBO title) , Evgeny Gradovich (IBF title) and Nicholas Walters (WBA title).
