Mickey Bey is the new IBF lightweight champion of the world after a disputed split decision victory over Miguel Vazquez tonight on the Mayweather-Maidana 2 undercard, winning on scores of 115-113, 113-115, and a wild 119-109 from Robert Hoyle. BLH had it 116-112 Vazquez, the same as Showtime's Steve Farhood.
Bey (21-1-1, 10 KO) landed 81 punches total in the fight, compared to a robust 89 from Vazquez (34-4, 13 KO). The fight was every bit as boring as expected, with Vazquez landing double digit punches in just two rounds, and Bey in just one. The fight did appear to be Vazquez's, but maybe 7-5 Bey is defensible. 11-1, however, is pretty hard to explain.
The fight was tactical, and was booed through most of the rounds by a crowd that had grown bored by the lack of action. But in that sense, it was exactly what was expected. This was never going to be an action fight, and it certainly was not, as Vazquez circled around and tried to work his jab, while Bey ... did other things. And there were enough rounds hard enough to call that Bey winning isn't the worst decision, perhaps, but again, 11-1? Pretty crazy.
How did you score it?
