Javier Mendoza captured the vacant IBF junior flyweight title with an impressive showing against veteran and former titleholder Ramon Garcia, winning on scores of 115-110, 115-110, and 116-109. BLH had it 117-108 for Mendoza.
Garcia (20-5-1, 12 KO) was down in the fifth and tenth rounds, and lost a point in round eight for low blows, as he had strayed below the belt a few times prior to that. Mendoza (22-2-1, 18 KO) had more power and more in his legs, perhaps owing to his nine-year age advantage and a lot less miles.
The first four rounds were split for me, with Mendoza taking the first two and Garcia the third and fourth, but after that, Mendoza took over, hammering Garcia to the body in a non-stop action fight, slowing him down and taking the starch out of him. Garcia was hurt several times other than just the knockdowns, too, including in the final round.
