Tonight on ESPN Friday Night Fights from the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, middleweight Boxcino tournament winner Willie Monroe Jr is back in action against veteran battler Bryan Vera in the main event, set for 10 rounds.
Monroe (18-1, 6 KO) was impressive in his tournament run last year, beating Donatas Bondorovas, Vitaliy Kopylenko, and Brandon Adams in February, April, and May to take the crown. He also hasn't fought since then, and the 5'10" southpaw -- nicknamed "The Mongoose" -- could be looking at a little ring rust tonight.
Vera (23-8, 14 KO) is a tough out for anyone, relatively easy to outbox but nearly impossible to deter. The 33-year-old Texan has lost two straight, however, both to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (one highly controversial in 2013, the other not at all in March of last year), and has himself been out of the ring for 10 months, outside of his BKB fight with Gabe Rosado. Vera will be back at his natural weight for this fight, having fought heavy against Chavez both times. He'd won four in a row before the losses to Chavez.
The original co-feature for tonight's show was to see Petr Petrov take on Hank Lundy, but that fight was canceled when Lundy missed weight by four pounds.
Connor Ruebusch will be your man tonight for FNF, with the action starting at 9:00 pm EST.
