Malignaggi not sure about boxing future, but wouldn't turn down shot at Brook

Paulie Malignaggi is mulling a return to the ring this year, and a world title shot against Kell Brook could be what does it.

Former junior welterweight and welterweight titleholder Paulie Malignaggi hasn't fought since a one-sided loss to Shawn Porter in April, and the 34-year-old veteran isn't sure if he'll fight again. But he says he wouldn't turn down a shot at Kell Brook, if the opportunity came to him:

"I can't figure out what I want to do, I think I'll figure it out in the new year. ... Kell Brook has a world title so he interests any top welterweight. Who wouldn't fancy a chance to win a world title? Kell's done a great job coming up the ranks and won the world title in magnificent fashion. It's certainly his moment to shine but an opportunity to win a world title is one I don't think anyone would turn down."

Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KO) has a steady job as an analyst at Showtime Sports and FOX Sports 1 for Golden Boy cards, and has drawn rave reviews for his analysis in that role. He's become a fan favorite commentator, a fighter who has the gift of gab and really understands the sweet science, and is also willing to be critical and give his true thoughts.

Brook (33-0, 22 KO) beat Porter in August to win the IBF welterweight title, but a December return date was scrapped when he was stabbed on a vacation. It's been expected that he'll return in the spring for his first title defense. Malignaggi would be a safe choice, it would seem, a non-puncher whose best days are behind him, who also still has some name value. And Paulie has a pretty nice following in the United Kingdom, too, thanks to past fights with Ricky Hatton and Amir Khan, and a fight in Manchester against Lovemore N'dou.

Malignaggi will be in Manchester again this month for a special Vegas-themed boxing event.
