Ronda Rousey was a massive favorite. She was the global superstar. She's the cover athlete on the upcoming EA UFC 2 video game. Holly Holm, a former boxing champion, smashed her tonight to win the UFC bantamweight championship, knocking Rousey out in the second round.

Holm largely dominated the first round, using footwork and some clever angles to land a lot of straight left hands from the southpaw stance, making Rousey give chase, walking right into shots from Holm, who even took Rousey down at one point.

Between rounds, Rousey looked tired in her corner, and came out for the second seeming slightly desperate. Holm, focused, took advantage of Rousey's recklessness, hurting her yet again, and then connecting with a high kick that landed on Rousey's jaw, knocking her out. Holm pounced to finish in case it was needed, and referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight, and conclude what may be the biggest upset in UFC history, and is easily the most stunning result of the year in combat sports.

Holm, 35, is now the first person to be a legitimate world champion in both boxing and mixed martial arts. She was simply marvelous in this fight, making Rousey fight exactly the way she needed Rousey to fight to have a chance at winning. And given that rope, she didn't slip by Rousey by decision or frustrate her, she beat her up and knocked her out.
