Watch Cotto vs Canelo full fight video highlights

Canelo Alvarez took down Miguel Cotto last night on HBO pay-per-view.

Canelo Alvarez is the new middleweight world champion after a wide decision win over Miguel Cotto last night on HBO pay-per-view, using his power and size to overcome the experienced Puerto Rican and score the best win of his young career.

Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KO) now has 15 days to make a deal for a fight with Gennady Golovkin, or he'll ostensibly be stripped of the WBC belt that he picked up with the victory, that was stripped of Cotto (40-5, 33 KO) last week. There are doubts that the WBC will strip Canelo, but they've said that they will. One theory is that Canelo and Golovkin will come to an agreement for a fight later in 2016, with Alvarez returning against someone else for his next fight in May.

HBO will replay Cotto-Canelo this coming Saturday night at 10:15 pm EST, paired with a same-day replay of Wladimir Klitschko vs Tyson Fury.
