Premier Boxing Champions will be making their splash on Fox at the top of the year where Danny Garcia will face Robert Guerrero on Jan. 23 at the Staples Center. I'm going to get this out of the way right now -- I'm a little disappointed in this match-up for Garcia, but that's just me.
Danny "Swift" Garcia (31-0, 18 knockouts) has recently, officially, vacated his 140lb belt before he took on Paulie Malignaggi this past August,in a fight that he dominated en-route to a 9th round stoppage. Shortly after that he was blessed by the birth of his child and took a little time off.
Robert "The Ghost [of himself]" Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) made his PBC debut last March where he got lit up by Keith Thurman over 12 rounds. Since then he came back to earn a split decision win over Aron Martinez, despite getting dropped hard in the fourth round. That fight was supposed to be a bounce back fight for Guerrero, but it turned out to be another grueling battle, much like his fight against Yoshihiro Kamegai in June of last year.
All told, I haven't seen Guerrero look particularly good in a fight since he beat Andre Berto in 2012 -- and even that fight wasn't particularly pretty, with Guerrero showcasing a lot of roughhouse tactics, getting away with a lot of holding and hitting. Maybe I'm being a little hard on Guerrero here, but that's my brutally honest assessment.
In addition to the main Fox channel, this PBC card will also be televised on Fox Deportes. Tickets are said to go on sale today, ranging from $25-$300 at 10am PST. Tickets can be purchased at axs.com and the Staples Center box office.
