It was announced tonight by HBO that Nicholas Walters has an opponent for June 20, as the WBA featherweight titleholder will face unbeaten Colombian prospect Miguel Marriaga at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Walters (25-0, 21 KO) made his HBO debut last October with a wipeout win over Nonito Donaire, dropping the Filipino star twice within his TKO-6 victory. The 29-year-old Jamaican was close to finalizing a fight with Gamalier Rodriguez earlier this year, but that fell apart and Rodriguez instead fought Vasyl Lomachenko.
Marriaga (20-0, 18 KO) had an impressive debut in the United States last year, beating Christopher Martin in October by sixth round knockout. Nicknamed "The Scorpion," his power looked legit, and not simply the product of a fluffed up record in his native country, as has often been the case with recent Colombian fighters and their strong KO percentages.
In other words, this is a nice-looking fight, and could be a real sleeper matchup with plenty of action. The HBO broadcast will also feature the premium network debut of Felix Verdejo (17-0, 13 KO), the top lightweight prospect out of Puerto Rico, as he faces San Antonio's Ivan Najera (16-0, 8 KO) in a clash of unbeaten young fighters.
