'Danny Bhoy' lost out on the biggest fight of his career when Paulie Malignaggi had to pull out of their May 29th fight due to a cut over his eye that occurred during training. Luckily for Danny, he's been recently picked up by Al Haymon who has the wherewithal to promptly find him another spot on the big stage. Danny O'Connor (25-2, 9 KOs) will now be facing hard charging Chris Gilbert (13-1, 10 KOs) on the PBC undercard of DeGale-Dirrell this Saturday afternoon, in what should make for a fun fight in Agganis Arena. O'Connor and Gilbert are considered two of the most popular fighters in New England and will fight in an 8-rounder for the New England welterweight championship title (which I admittedly have never heard of before).
"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to fight Chris in Boston," said O'Connor. "Being able to do what I love in front of my hometown fans that have supported me since day one is very meaningful to me."
Ken Casey, the CEO of Murphy's Boxing who promote Danny, says about that the pride on the line against Gilbert can be worth more than the money Danny would've received against Malignaggi.
"This is a fight that local fight fans have been eager to see for a long time," said Ken Casey. "New England's premiere welterweight versus New England's hardest hitting welterweight. Pride can be worth more than money sometimes and the right to call yourself 'New England welterweight' champ is very important to a fighter in this close knit community."
This PBC card will also feature Edwin Rodriguez (26-1, 17 KOs) vs. Chris Baker (16-0, 12 KOs) in a light heavyweight bout. All fights consider, this should make for a fun, fight-filled Saturday afternoon in Boston.
