Nonito Donaire's potential fight with Hugo Ruiz in a WBC super bantamweight eliminator is not going to happen, as Top Rank is steering him away from that fight to return instead on July 18 in Macau, as had already been their plan, against a lower-level opponent, according to ESPN.com.
Donaire (34-3, 22 KO) will possibly face France's Anthony Settoul (20-3, 8 KO) in Macau, which could set up a fight later this year with Scott Quigg or Carl Frampton, the report says. Settoul, a 28-year-old French fighter, was in the mix to fight Leo Santa Cruz on the Mayweather-Pacquiao card, a spot that eventually went to Jose Cayetano instead.
The main event of the Macau show will be Ik Yang (19-0, 14 KO) taking on Cesar Cuenca (47-0, 2 KO) for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title, which was recently stripped from Lamont Peterson for whatever reason. Yang, 30, is a Chinese native whom Bob Arum says is "beloved by the President of China," Xi Jinping. Yang fought on the March card in Macau, beating Thailand's Patomsuk Pathompothong via sixth round TKO.
The card will also feature an IBF lightweight title fight between Mickey Bey and Denis Shafikov, as previously reported.
