Tonight at 9 pm EST on Spike, Premier Boxing Champions is back with a doubleheader from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, featuring a welterweight main event between Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KO) and Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KO), a pivotal fight for Khan that could lead to a shot at Floyd Mayweather in September.

Algieri is certainly the big underdog here, as on paper it appears as though the style matchup clearly favors Khan, but Algieri has surprised before, like last June when he beat Ruslan Provodnikov on HBO. Since then, he's faced and been thrashed by Manny Pacquiao, but Algieri has switched up his training, replacing Tim Lane with John David Jackson as his chief second, and Algieri does not lack for confidence.

The co-feature is a really nice matchup between super featherweight contenders Javier Fortuna (27-0-1, 20 KO) and Bryan Vasquez (34-1, 18 KO). Fortuna has been inconsistent in recent fights, sometimes looking like a top fighter, sometimes looking mediocre. Vasquez's only loss came to Takashi Uchiyama in 2012, and he's won five straight since then. This fight is for the vacant WBA "world" title, which would be the fake version of the belt Uchiyama holds, but as an interim idea, it actually works, with Uchiyama on the shelf for a while due to injury.

ROUND BY ROUND

AMIR KHAN vs CHRIS ALGIERI

Round 1: Khan's speed showing for most of this round, as he's landing good shots and putting together combinations. Basically for about 2:50 it's what you expected, and then Algieri tags Khan with a flush right hand, staggers him a bit, and if anything, though he lost the round, Algieri probably gains confidence. Khan 10-9

Round 2: Khan showing his speed once again, landing quick right hands. Khan clubs him with a left hook off the side of the head. Algieri coming forward this round, not really pressuring but he's the man going in. Algieri misses a couple shots, Khan pops him with quick potshots. Right to the body by Khan, Algieri swings and misses. Jab jab right from Khan, partially blocked. Algieri wings hooks to the body, then gets popped with a jab again. Khan 10-9, 20-18

Round 3: Khan with a ripping left hook about a minute into the round, Algieri throws back. Algieri digs to the body. Khan moving around the ring, Algieri chasing him and really working hard to make this a brawl. Right hand just barely misses from distance. Khan sticking his jab out again. Super hot crowd, both guys have their vocal fans now. The Algieri section is rising up to battle the Khan fans. Algieri landing good stuff this round and has Khan on the back foot clearly, while Algieri won't step back. What a fun round that was. Algieri 10-9, Khan 29-28

Round 4: Algieri's right hands have made an impact in this fight. Khan boxing and moving, landing shots in the first half of this round. Algieri hits him with a hook to the body, and one upstairs, then a lead right. Khan is not dramatically better than Algieri so far by any means and has a very good game plan. Algieri really letting his hands go in this fight and lands ANOTHER right hand. Khan whacks away with an abnormally slow right to the body. Algieri 10-9, 38-38

Round 5: Algieri is really busting his ass in this fight. This is probably the best I've seen him fight overall. Experience + a better trainer = results so far. Algieri stalking Khan constantly, and Khan seems unsure of how he wants to approach this guy right now. Khan did trip over the referee's foot this round. I did like Amir this round, but there's a growing sense that Algieri is going to make him earn this more than anyone expected. Khan 10-9, 48-47

Round 6: Khan with a sharp, lightning fast three punch combo early in the round, but Algieri just keeps on coming at him and landing shots. Good right hand from Khan. Khan smacks him with another right as Algieri is throwing. Again Khan tags him after Algieri misses a lead right. Khan adjusting well this round. Khan 10-9, 58-56

Round 7: Algieri sprints out of the corner to start this round. Khan working his jab in the opening minute here. Algieri still stalking but now getting picked off. Algieri presses him to the ropes and tries to throw, Khan muscles him over into the corner and lands a body shot. Algieri targeting the body to try and take Khan's legs away. I like what Khan's done these last two rounds. Khan lands another good combination. Algieri needs to figure something out now, because Khan has Plan A scouted and seemingly beaten now. Khan 10-9, 68-65

Round 8: Khan starting well again this round, but then BAM! Algieri hits him with another flush shot that gets Khan's attention. Algieri with a good body shot, Khan gets rough inside and tries to muscle him in the clinch again. Algieri barely misses another wild right hand that Khan didn't see coming. Right hand from Khan, then he slips out before Algieri can respond. Left hook from Algieri a bit short, and Khan nicked him with a right hand in response. Algieri trying to press in the final moments, Khan gets out of the way. I liked Algieri here. Algieri 10-9, Khan 77-75

Round 9: Khan continuing to move around outside, Algieri continuing to come forward. Khan likes to get in and out with his speed, Algieri has no fear of Khan's power, which has been the big thing. His aggression has made this the fight it is. Khan with a big round in the 9th, needed it to take back the momentum. Khan 10-9, 87-84

Round 10: Khan rips him inside with a vicious uppercut, but Algieri stands his ground and throws to the body. Algieri is just putting in the performance of his life tonight. He's not winning, but he's fighting his heart out. Khan with a smashing hook to the side of Algieri's head. Khan having another really strong round and is trying to take this fight over. Algieri with a right hand, but Khan gets out before any follow-up. Khan 10-9, 97-93

Round 11: Algieri slowing down some this round, but lands another hard overhand right. Khan has been a sucker for that shot all night. I went with Algieri close in this round. Algieri 10-9, Khan 106-103

Round 12: Both come out to fight this round, nobody believing it's all sewn up. Farhood has Khan up 107-102, and I think it's Khan's to lose, but you never know in boxing. Khan with a right hand. Right hand from Algieri. Algieri with a jab. Algieri spitting blood but fighting like he did in the first round. Amazing conditioning on both of these guys tonight. Fight ends and both men raise their hands. I give this round narrowly to Chris Algieri. This fight was closer than anyone expected. Algieri 10-9, Khan 115-113

JAVIER FORTUNA vs BRYAN VASQUEZ

Round 1: Fortuna with a nice body shot and then a wonky little right hand to the head at a very weird angle. Southpaw vs southpaw matchup for a moment as Vasquez gets turned around. Right hand from Vasquez gets through. Vasquez spins southpaw again for a moment. Fortuna shooting hard left hands from distance, coming up a bit short. Vasquez awkwardly working his way in and this is some real herky-jerky action at the moment as they keep finding themselves in odd positions. Left to the body from Fortuna. Hands flying but no one landing clean. Good hook there from Vasquez, Fortuna firing absolute bombs from left field. Right from Vasquez. Right hand from Vasquez again, a cuffing little shot. Lead left from Fortuna, and then another, and he starts firing shots to the body and head when he gets close, but he's too close for anything to land clean and hard. Fortuna 10-9

Round 2: Lead left from Fortuna again, Vasquez fires back with a hook that doesn't land solidly but does get in. Left to the body from Vasquez, right clips him as he retreats. Long left from Fortuna, Vasquez misses a looping right in return. Vasquez slamming to the body when they tie up. Fortuna goes a little low on a break and apologizes with a bow. Vasquez doesn't make a stink. Vasquez keeps getting close, but can't connect with anything clean, and then has to awkwardly get out before Fortuna lands something big. Vasquez with a hard body shot after Fortuna misses a wild shot. Both guys celebrating. Fortuna 10-9, 20-18

Round 3: Vasquez missing shots from range, which is how Fortuna is winning this fight. He's able to land shots from this distance, and Vasquez is struggling. Vasquez lands, but Fortuna comes back and the two tie up while throwing goofy ass punches. Vasquez clips Fortuna as he fires both hands with Fortuna cornered a bit. Fortuna catches Vasquez with a nice shot again at the end of the round. Vasquez did better, Fortuna still won the round. Fortuna 10-9, 30-27

Round 4: Kind of like a 130-pound version of Arreola-Harper but not as awesome. Vasquez has a good two minutes and then they club the shit out of each other at the end of the round. Javier could be on his way to a possible stoppage if he doesn't caught and this keeps up, though. He's landing some heavy shots that are getting to Vasquez. Vasquez 10-9, Fortuna 39-37

Round 5: Vasquez looking a bit more tired this round, which is understandable. But he's still winging wild shots. In close and they're scrapping again. Fortuna catches Vasquez with his hands down. Good uppercut from Fortuna. GOOFY ASS Gatti right hand from Vasquez. I liked Vasquez's body shots in this round again. Vasquez 10-9, Fortuna 48-47

Round 6: Vasquez landing some good, clean shots as they scrap inside again. Vasquez landing better shots at this point but not with the sort of volume and a lot of it might be getting masked by where he's landing, in close and to the body. Fortuna just sort of touching here and there, the big hyped explosiveness having faded and the thudding blows aren't there like they were earlier. Fortuna pushes Vasquez to the ropes and lands a couple shots. Fortuna 10-9, 58-56

Round 7: Vasquez starting well again. One thing he's done consistently in this fight is lose the last minute. Fortuna moving a lot this round and not throwing as much, Vasquez getting in with the better work. Fortuna landing late AGAIN in this round and might be stealing this one. Vasquez dominated the majority of this round, but the flashiest stuff was from Fortuna in the final 20 seconds. Vasquez 10-9, Fortuna 67-66

Round 8: Interesting round as both guys are starting to feel the fatigue from their output. Fortuna takes more breaks, but when he does, he doesn't get caught as much as Vasquez does when he's not throwing. I liked Vasquez narrow in this round, which again ended with a lot of throwing. Vasquez 10-9, 76-76

Round 9: Vasquez whacking away at the body in another close round. More clinching as this goes on as Fortuna is less inclined to trade in close. Fortuna landed better shots this round and flurried yet again in the closing seconds. What a game plan. Fortuna 10-9, 86-85

Round 10: Fortuna starting fast with goofy ass hooks and nonsense, landing a few, Vasquez bangs to the body when they tie up. Right hand from Vasquez. Fortuna is an awkward fighter. Darts in and out at weird times, can land from range, can bang a little inside, has a lot of guts. Fortuna 10-9, 96-94

Round 11: Vasquez with a couple good right hands. Chopping shots as they both throw inside, Vasquez getting the better of that. Fortuna on his bike a little bit and making Vasquez pursue fruitlessly. Vasquez pounding away at the body again, Fortuna grabbing and trying to avoid confrontation right now. Flurry at the end of the round again. Vasquez 10-9, Fortuna 105-104

Round 12: Fortuna picking and pecking and running around this round, but at the same time landing shots, which Vasquez is not doing right now. Crowd booing Fortuna's showboating in the final minute. Vasquez lands a few shots down the stretch, but Fortuna did enough in the first two minutes, even with the dancing. Fortuna 10-9, 115-113
