Though Amir Khan has repeatedly stated that he wouldn't be able to fight Floyd Mayweather in September due to Ramadan being a major factor in his preparation for the potential fight, he's now changed his tune, and says he's willing to fight the pound-for-pound king on his proposed return date of September 12.
Khan, 28, has been angling to face Mayweather, 38, for years now, and September may be his final opportunity.
"Mayweather normally fights mid-September and Ramadan is a little bit earlier this year. It gives me enough time to get the training done, so it can happen."
Ramadan is June 17 to July 17 this year, which would give Khan just under eight weeks to get prepared for the fight, which would likely happen on September 12. Khan (30-3, 19 KO) says he's also not looking past his May 29 fight in Brooklyn against Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KO):
"I'm not going to be fighting Mayweather until I win this fight. I'm not looking past Chris because I've made that mistake in the past. There are bigger fights out there for me, but this is my focus."
Amir appeared headed toward a fight with Mayweather before losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia in 2011-12, and was also the favorite to fight Mayweather in May 2014, before he chose to forego a proposed December 2013 date with Devon Alexander. When he did, Marcos Maidana swooped in, beating Adrien Broner in December and getting the Mayweather date in May.
Khan last fought in December 2014, handily beating Devon Alexander on Showtime. His fight with Algieri will be a PBC event on Spike.
Is this good news in your view? Is Mayweather-Khan the best possible fight for September? And do you worry Khan might not be in top condition if he does get the date?
