Julian "J-Rock" Williams had his way tonight on Showtime Extreme, handling Armen Ovsepyan with ease en route to a sixth round TKO victory, improving to 20-0-1 (12 KO) and looking ready to step up to the next level, which his team says is coming in September.
WIlliams, 25, scored a knockdown of Ovsepyan (14-5, 11 KO) early in the opening round, not flooring him completely but forcing his glove to scrape the canvas, which was rightly ruled by referee Jeff Dodson. Williams went for the kill for most of the remainder of round one, and hurt Ovsepyan repeatedly, but when he saw that Ovsepyan wasn't going to go down easy, he backed off the pressure and went into his usual pace.
That pace and Williams' skill level were far too much for Ovsepyan, 29, a 5'8" Russian welterweight who was moving up in weight for this bout. At the time of the stoppage at 2:43 of round 6, all three judges had it 50-44 in Williams' favor, and BLH had it 50-43, giving Williams a 10-7 opening round instead of 10-8.
After the fight, Williams expressly called out Austin Trout, telling the former titleholder to "stop running, turkey!" Will that be the next fight for "J-Rock" in September, and if it is, is he going to translate well to the higher levels?
