Danny Garcia is scheduled to face Paulie Malignaggi on August 1st in his first true welterweight fight and expects fans to see him in prime condition. He admits, in retrospect, that he should've moved directly into the welterweight division after his 2013 fight with Lucas Matthysse, and attributes his lackluster performances since then to issues making weight - weights that he and his team effectively chose.
"Losing weight was affecting me in my last few bouts. I believe it would have been better if I'd climbed to welterweight right after the fight with Mathysse´s fight," commented Danny.
" I was big for that division. As super lightweight I never faced a bigger or taller opponent. I was a big fighter with problems at that limit. As a welter you will see an athletic Danny Garcia with more boxing skills. When you have problems with the weight you are slower so I had to put pressure on my rivals looking for the KO, as I wasn't able to box them anymore. I didn't have a choice any more."
With Danny officially in the welterweight division there are plenty of good fights awaiting him. Paulie, I don't really consider to be one of them. It'll be interesting to see how Garcia is matched-up after this bout though. How do you see Danny faring against the likes of Thurman, Brook, Porter, and 'the new' Amir Khan?
