Miguel Cotto and Daniel Geale both made weight today for tomorrow night's HBO World Championship Boxing main event from Brooklyn's Barclays Center. With a catchweight of 158 pounds for the fight, Geale weighed in at 157, with Cotto at 153.6.
Cotto (39-4, 32 KO) hasn't fought in a year, since defeating a clearly hobbled and limited version of Sergio Martinez at Madison Square Garden to win the WBC middleweight belt and the division's lineal championship. But Cotto, 34, is clearly no real middleweight, and with Geale (31-3, 16 KO) a legitimate 160-pound fighter who doesn't have issues walking as far as we know, this fight might be a bit more of a challenge than some are expecting.
If Cotto wins, he is expected to face Canelo Alvarez in a highly-anticipated bout that would renew the Puerto Rico vs Mexico boxing rivalry with a couple of A-list stars. That fight has been close before -- it was supposed to happen in 2013, before Cotto lost to Austin Trout, and the sides negotiated earlier this year, too.
Geale is 0-2 career in HBO fights, losing a close decision to Darren Barker in 2013 and a TKO-3 against Gennady Golovkin 11 months ago.
